Tonight the first of two concerts of the Duong Dai Festival 2012 was successfully performed in HCMC (VN)! My dear friend Kim represented me and received the flowers in my place.

Water Puppet Theatre

On my first visit to Vietnam, I made some time to see a performance in a water puppet theatre in Saigon. Puppetry has a long tradition in Asia; the one from Indonesia, Wayang, might be one of the most famous ones. Despite its long tradition, it seems to become one more of the disappearing art …

Caodaism

Caodaist church in Can Gio South
The first time I saw a building of the Caodaists, I almost mistook it for a Christian church. With their two church towers in front, and the long main building behind, they tend to look like small Notre-Dames, if not for their shiny dark yellow colour, charmingly decorated balconies and windows, and especially, the striking presence of the blue. Buddhism in Vietnam

incense burner (lư hương)
Vietnam, mainly because of its history, knows two main directions of Buddhism: Mahayana and Theravada. Next to these two, some small quantities of sects can be found, which have split from the main directions even as late as the 20th century. Like in other Buddhist traditions all over Asia, the one in Vietnam carries a strong coloring of local habits and rituals, too.

The Sound of a Mangrove Forest?!

The other day I traveled to Cần Giờ, approximately 40 km south east of Ho Chi Minh City. Taking the motorbike, I left the city early with the first sun rays peaking through the cloudy sky. It seems though, that the people of HCM never sleep. At seven in the morning it feels as busy and crowded in the streets like at any other time of the day.
Finding the way out of the city is the ticky part of the journey. There are no visible signs – or at least none which I was aware of. Leaving the city via district seven (Q7), and taking the fairy, I was out of town on the other side within an hour. On my arrival there it was immediately clear that here the clock of time and life is using a different rhythm. Much less crowded, only a few motorbikes, and incredibly much space, allowing for big, open streets, I travelled almost by myself.
